“When I was at Cal Poly studying biochemistry, I met Justin Smith and helped with a harvest at James Berry Vineyard,” said Linne Calodo’s founder and winemaker, Matt Trevisan. “It was fun to see a family on a farm making wine. This idea of space. At that time, the power of making wine didn't occur to me.” This detour from the lab to the land would shape the rest of Trevisan’s life, as he soon became fixated on what he calls “the ongoing experiment” of winegrowing.
The Ongoing Experiment
After graduating from Cal Poly, Trevisan planned to pursue a career in pharmaceuticals. But breaking into that world proved difficult. “I graduated, needed a job, and didn’t know what to do,” he said. “I asked Justin if I could work at James Berry. My parents weren’t too happy. I killed gophers and did weed whacking....
