Maritana Vineyards

Those who drink Northern California Chardonnays and Pinots will likely know Patz & Hall—one of the area’s largest producers of high-quality wines from these varieties. For three decades, the brand helped define a reliable, site-specific style of Sonoma-grown Burgundy varieties, ultimately becoming one of California’s most widely recognized premium producers. But the corporate sale of the winery in 2016—and its eventual repurchase by co-founder James Hall in 2024—effectively marked the end of a chapter for Donald Patz, the other half of the original partnership. By the time the brand returned to Hall’s hands, Patz had already built a new trajectory, one that reflects both continuity and clear departure.
