Château Léoville Poyferré
In the pantheon of Bordeaux’s Left Bank greats, the trio of Léoville estates in Saint-Julien coexist with a touch of sibling rivalry. All three — Léoville-Las Cases, Léoville Barton, and Léoville Poyferré — trace their lineage to a single, sprawling vineyard once owned by Alexandre de Gasq, the Lord of Léoville. The social upheavals of the French Revolution fragmented that holding and set in motion a chain of events that, by the mid-19th century, had begotten three neighboring yet stylistically singular Second Growth châteaux. For many Bordeaux collectors, Léoville Poyferré has an unabashedly flamboyant personality.
The Flamboyant Sibling
The Léoville estate was defragmented over successive decades. In 1826, Hugh Barton — an Irish expatriate and scion of one of Ireland’s great wine families — established Léoville Barton on a discrete portion of the original holding.
